Preview Pane and Other Things

Preview
For those of you that do not know what I am talking about when I say preview pane in Outlook Express it is that little window on the bottom no the right side of Outlook Express Click Here to see image. So why do you want to get raid of this window? That is simple, it is the easiest way to get a virus into your system and too prevent you from having to view the explicit sex adds that we are being forced to view every day.

To remove the perview pane is a simple two step project click on View then click on Layout then uncheck the "Show Preview pane" and click OK Click here. That is all there is to it, you are one more step away from getting some type of bug into your system.

Attachments

Now for the other things that you can do to protect your system form those that would like to see your system crash. I understand that some of you will not open any attachment from any one. That is a good thing, did you know that Outlook Express can be set up so that it will not accept any attachments? The way that you set up Outlook Express to do that is by clicking on Tools, Options and at the top of Options window click on Security tab and put a check in the box next to "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" then click OK Click Here. From that point Outlook Express will scan all attachments and block all attachments that may have a virus and delete them. Here again I need to say that you need to apply a word of caution. Outlook Express may delete ALL email that has any attachment.

Block Sender List
As with all of Microsoft products there are many ways of doing anything and Outlook Express is no exception. It is easy to add a person to the block sender list, however say that you add someone that you did not mean to add then what?

Well first let me show the how to add a email address to the block sender list. The first way is real simple just click on "Message" then click on "Block Sender" and that is it. All email from that person will be blocked and deleted from now till you remove their address from the Block Senders List.

The other way is as easy providing you know how to get around in Outlook Express. That is click on "Tools", "Message Rules" and then "Block Sender List". When the window opens click "Add" and type in the email address or the domain (i.e... aol.com) that you want to block. Another word of caution if you block a domain like AOL.com or Juno.Com ALL email from this domain will be blocked till you remove the block.

Now as I said earlier I would show you how to remove a person or a domain from the block sender list. If you have been looking and listing you should already have an idea. Click on "Tools", "Message Rules" and then "Block Sender List". When the window opens click on the name, email address or domain that you want to remove from the list and then click"Remove"that simple. Now you will be able to get email from that person or domain again.

Outlook Hangs up After checking mail

When I worked for Client logic as a tech for Earthlink this little feature would drive some people up a tree or send them into a 20 or 30 minute call. All it is, is 5 minute call if you know anything about Outlook Express. To fix the problem click on Tools, Options and then click on the Connection tab at the top of the Options Windows. Uncheck the box that reads "Hand up after sending and reciving" ; that will fix the problem.

Import & Export

This is one the the feathers that I do not use that much but I have used and found it some what easy to use. It is a habit of mine to copy my Juno, Outlook Express mail folders to another folder on my computer so that I can back them up to a CD.

This habit payed off one time when I had to format my main drive. I thought that I had lost all of my email and address book but remembered that I had copied the Outlook Express mail to another folders on another drive so I found it. Them I went into Outlook Express clicked on File, Import, Outlook Express and so on till all of the folders from my old Outlook Express was in my new with all the messages.

I also have used the Export function to export my addres as a "Text File (Comma Separted Value)" then imported it into another persons Outlook Express and had no problems with it.
